A successful defense attorney, Maxwell Grimes (60’s), discovers his trophy wife, Heather Grimes (30), is having an affair with one of his former clients, Ben Frazier (20’s). He plans a romantic helicopter tour for himself and Heather for their first anniversary but bows out the day before, using his work as an excuse. The trip is nonrefundable, so he asks her to take one of her girlfriends along for the day.
The following day, Heather arrives at the helicopter company with her boyfriend Ben. The pilot, a crusty old military veteran Willie Crockett, suggests a scenic shortcut across the sea. Excited about the adventure, they board the craft and take off over the open water. An hour or so into the flight, the cabin starts to fill with smoke and the pilot announces he must make an emergency landing. With nothing but water everywhere, the pilot sights an island and successfully lands in a clearing on it. He inspects the chopper and says there is some sort of electrical issue and the whole system crashes; no radio to call for help and no way of restarting the helicopter. The trio settle in for what could be a long stay in the middle of nowhere.
The pilot offers them a small meal he has saved and a flask of whiskey. The next morning, Heather and Ben wake up on the beach and discover the pilot and helicopter are gone. They realize they were drugged and have been abandoned on the island with no food or water. They literally have nothing except the clothes on their backs. Meanwhile on the mainland, Maxwell is messing around with his assistant and former fiancée Silvia, something that obviously has been going on for a while. He files a police report about his missing wife and the case is assigned to a young detective, Melissa Clementine.
She interviews Maxwell, where he discloses, he believes Heather has run off with another man. Bank and credit card records reveal large amounts of money have been withdrawn with Heather’s card in the past few days. Maxwell is quite convincing and offers his assistance in the investigation, but Clementine has her suspicions. Heather and Ben start to explore the island, trying to find a way to survive, only to discover they may not be alone.
What they don’t know is they are being watched by a CCTV system that was installed on the island earlier. They find footprints in areas they have not been in and are hopeful of other human life to help them. Unknown to them, the inhabitants are descendants of prisoners that were marooned there many decades before. Days drag on with no new developments in the case. Maxwell continues with his law practice as if nothing has happened as well as his playboy ways while Detective Clementine digs deeper and starts to see some strange inconsistencies in the story from Maxwell.
Most of the documents that have been supplied to her by Maxwell and Silvia have been altered, making it hard to track the real details. On the island, Ben, and Heather set snare traps at a watering hole they have found but when they return to check them, they encounter one of the nomadic creatures that inhabit the island. A fight ensues and the creature gets away but not before giving Ben and Heather a good scare and some battle wounds. Detective Clementine continues to look into Maxwell and finds a strange call on the cell phone records that disclose her last call was to the helicopter company. She arrives at the airport and talks with Willie, who denies finding anything. Clementine doesn’t believe him but leaves her card if he finds any other information.
Heather sleeps next to their makeshift hut when the creature wakes her. She screams and Ben comes to the rescue, but he is overwhelmed by not one but six of the creatures. Heather is taken and Ben is left for dead. The whole thing is captured on video by the hidden cameras. As Clementine arrives again at Maxwell’s law offices, her phone rings. It’s Willie and he’s feeling guilty about not confessing his knowledge about Heather. Clementine agrees to return to the helicopter hangers, but she invites Maxwell.
Maxwell doesn’t go without a fight but is pressured into it by Clementine. When they arrive at the hangers, Willie spills the beans, telling them about the trip that was planned to leave the couple alone on the uncharted island. He only accepted the job because he was told they were to be picked up shortly after by boat. Maxwell seems just as puzzled as Clementine. Willie agrees to take them to the island but it’s getting late and he’s afraid they will not have daylight for the return trip.
Clementine argues that time is of the essence and all three go to the island. Ben finds Heather tied to a tree as the tribe celebrates her capture. When they aren’t paying attention, Ben, and Heather escape, but the creatures realize this and are in pursuit. Willie, Maxwell, and Clementine arrive on the island as the sun sets. They find the broken hut covered in blood and are convinced the trip is no longer a rescue but a recovery mission.
Disappointed, Clementine leads the others into the dense jungle. She has words with Maxwell and tells him she knew he was involved. As they talk, Ben and Heather emerge from the dark jungle. The reunion isn’t pretty and is short as the tribe of creatures surround them. From the dark room, two people watch the scene play out through the CCTV system.
